PRO
TIPS

We want your paddling experience in Cherry Grove to be a memorable one, for all the right reasons. Here are a few pro tips for you. With that being said, Hog’s Inlet & the Salt Marsh are extremely tidal. Where the high tides are high and the low tides are low. The tides come in out very quickly, typically twice a day. So choosing the right time to put your yak or SUP in the water is key.

Never underestimate Mother Nature. Always check the weather conditions & tides for the day prior to going out. We highly recommend downloading a tides app, wind app, and weather radar app on your phone. If you are unsure about the conditions or best times to launch, feel free to contact us and ask for our recommendations. We are here to help and continue building a fun and safe kayaking community in NMB.

Paddling to the Point or Waties Island

  • Ride the outgoing tide straight out to the point and Island.
    • Launch approximately 1 hour before the low tide point
  • Ride the incoming tide back to the landing
    • Start heading back once the tide has switched and begun
  • Do not wait too long to head back, as the waters separating the point and Waties Island can become dangerous with swells rolling through as the high tide rises.

Exploring the Salt Marsh

  • The marsh is only safely accessible once the tides are above 2ft. At low tide the marsh is nothing more than oyster beds, pluff mud, cord grass, and minimal water.
  • Check the tides and heights of the high tide for the day. Not all high tides are equal.
  • Launch approximately an hour prior to the high tide point.
    • This will ensure you have ample time to explore our beautiful marsh before the tide drops below a safe level.
  • Always take notice of the water levels! You do not want to get stuck out in the marsh waiting hours on the next rising tide.
