Tides of North Myrtle Beach

Have you ever wondered what influences the tides on the beach? If you’ve spent more than an hour relaxing or taking a stroll on the beach, chances are the shoreline hasn’t stayed in the same place. Tides are a daily phenomena created by the gravitational forces of the moon, sun, and inertia.

The Moon & Sun's Tidal Effect

The moon’s gravitational attraction pulls water to one side of the earth, while inertia pulls water to the opposite side. These bulges of water remain aligned with the moon as the earth rotates each day. The rotation of earth through these bulges essentially creates long, extensive waves in the oceans. High tide takes place when the highest part of the wave (crest) reaches the shore; low tide occurs with the lowest part of the wave (trough).

In addition to the moon, the sun’s gravitational force also affects the tides. When the sun, moon, and earth all fall in alignment, the tides are influenced by the gravitational forces of the sun and the moon. This combination of forces, commonly known as king tides, creates tides that are extraordinarily higher and lower than normal.

Tides in North Myrtle Beach

Here in North Myrtle Beach, we experience semidiurnal tides. This means that every day, the tides cycle through two highs and two lows that occur at around the same place. During certain times of the month, tides can become higher or lower than usual.

It is important to be aware of the tides when planning your next kayak adventure. Timing your trip with water levels as well as tidal currents will ensure that you have a safe, enjoyable time.

Don't Get Tide Up On Your Next Kayaking or Paddle Boarding Adventure

Hog’s Inlet in Cherry Grove Beach is the perfect place to embark on your next kayak and or paddle board adventure  There is a different adventure in store at high and low tide. High tide is the perfect time to explore the Cherry Grove salt marsh. The channels within the salt marsh are the easiest to maneuver and some sections are only accessible  when water levels are high. The extensive oyster beds in the marsh are very sharp, posing harm to humans and equipment during low tide.

However, when the tides retreat back to sea and the marsh emerges with low tide, it is the perfect time to take a trip out to explore Waites Island. The island sits at the tip of North Myrtle Beach, just past the Cherry Grove point. It is safely accessible through Hog’s inlet during low tide; however it is strongly advised to not venture out to the island during high tide, as the conditions can be both rough and unpredictable.

Here at Trailblaze Adventure we time all of our kayak and paddle board tours daily to ensure a leisurely and safe experience on the water in North Myrtle Beach.
